About Virginia Carter

A native of Lexington, Kentucky, I grew up loving horses and just about everything else with four legs. Based in Lexington and photographing at Keeneland year-round, I also travel to Tampa Bay Downs, Arlington Race Track, Monmouth Park, and to other racecourses, including Royal Ascot.

My photographic specialty is equine sports. I am passionate about Thoroughbred racing. If the sun is shining, you will find me at the rail with my camera.

Also posted on this website are some examples of related sports and a few representatives of my overall interest in wildlife and exotic landscape. But nothing compares with documenting the development of a racehorse.

With a Ph.D. in anthropology, a professional background in fine arts, and having spent a career as the executive director of the Kentucky Humanities, Inc., my experiences include university teaching, forensic sculpture, museum exhibit design, illustration, artistic production, and scriptwriting. Throughout my life, I have found ways to educate the public about the history of horse racing and the people whose lives are dedicated to horses. – Virginia G. Carter
